As you know, we’re in Hotlanta for NN17, so I may not be around to chat much. If you truly have an answer to my music dilemna (how to get my iTunes library back) send me a kosmail and I’ll love you forever! —> smileycreek
Where Do You Keep Your Music Library?
Of course we’ve all gone through the stages of music storage: Reel-to-reel, vinyl albums, 4 track tapes, 8 track tapes, cassette tapes, Compact Discs (CD’s) then MP3’s and now it’s all in the Cloud, available for streaming. Between pNut and me we still have tons of vinyl and drawers full of CD’s.
It’s time for me to “update my files” again when it comes to music storage. I started sharing music with various programs (remember Napster and Jukebox?) and settled on iTunes around 2007. I’ve accumulated a hefty iTunes library of over 5,000 songs, most of which I downloaded for free using (cough) various methods and most of which is Indie in nature. Since iTunes will only store purchased music in their cloud most of my music library is tied to my PC.

Hence my (admittedly First World) problem. When my 2007 laptop was on the verge of giving up the ghost I backed up my entire iTunes libary to my iPad and then took the PC into the shop. They were able to get it working really well again, but at the cost of basically taking it back to factory reset levels so that Windows 10 would work. In the process iTunes was wiped out. No worries, I have my library with all its playlists and ratings backed up. Here’s the rub, though: You can move an iTunes Library from a PC to an Apple device but not the other way around.
Does anyone know a way around this? Is there a safe third party app that will transfer my library from my iPad intact with playoists and ratings back to iTunes on a PC? If you have the answer, please kosmail me!
The young computer tech who was baffled by this issue suggested Spotify, saying that I should be able to move my entire music library over there. I’m disinclined to pay Spotify for their Premium service. I want my library back on my PC and not on some streaming service where it can be disappeared at any time. But I have been playing with the free version of Spotify a little bit. If I hear a song on the radio TV that I like, I’ll “listen” to it with Shazaam on my phone and then add it to my Spotify playlist. I can see the advantage of having music in the Cloud instead of using up my hard drive, but just like people who prefer books on the bookshelf instead of on aKindle, I’d like my music under my own control again. Any help would be appreciated!
